The Shockley Foundation was established by dramatist Edgar Shockley III and named in honor of Edgar Shockley Jr. (the first black master plumber in the states of New Jersey and Massachusetts and co-founder the Contractors Association of Boston to assist others to achieve their life's dream) and Alice L. Shockley (who was her family's first graduate of higher education and served the community for more than thirty years as a registered nurse and supervisor at Philadelphia General Hospital and the Philadelphia Nursing Home.)
"In my long arts career I have witnessed the crushing weight of poverty upon many artists. Ability and stability are often unrelated. My hope has been to create a vehicle to maximize opportunities for subtantitive impact in the lives of my peers. This foundation, modeled after the 'Key Fellow Program' of Cork, Ireland will ultimately leave an indelible mark upon the face of contemporary art."
Ed Shockley
The mission: To offer unrestricted financial aid in the form of multi-year grants and in-kind services to living artists of exceptional ability and demonstrated selfless dedication to humanity .
